Walking into the Light

(auto) biography

Five years old: Dad lets me strum along as he fingers the chords to Bob Dylan's "Don't Think Twice, it's Alright". Guitar lessons are soon to follow.

Six to twelve: I study classical guitar at Northern Arizona University Preparatory School of Music. In middle-school, there is an assignment to score a piece of music by coloring in the squares on a piece of graph-paper. A different color for each instrument, and the number of squares colored in represents the length of time each note lasts.

Thirteen: My first electric guitar. By fourteen I join my high school jazz band. It's an uphill battle mastering jazz harmony, but I'm hooked.

Eighteen to twenty-two: Music school at the University of North Texas. While there, I lead two bands: The Great Escape, which performs Pat Metheny-esque original jazz compositions and Laszlo, a band that gives me the chance to merge progressive-rock, jazz and acoustic hip-hop.

Twenty-three: Studies in multi-media at the Art Institute of Dallas lead to my first experiences with digital audio. I spend long hours recombining Bulgarian folk songs with acoustic and electric guitars.

Twenty-four: Relocated back to Arizona and re-connected with Chris Staley, a childhood friend, whose experiments with audio in his project, the Anti-Muzak Theorem, open me up to a whole new way of listening to music, and set the stage for my later work in electronic music.

Twenty-six to the present: Moved to New York City, where I play lead guitar in the indie-rock band Her Majesty and continue to compose and perform minimal and, when all is well, conciousness-expanding electronic music.
